[The Sunday Documentary] : Antikythera Mechanism : The 1st Century BC Computer!

Starting from today, I’m going to write about one great documentary taken from YouTube every Sunday. Not only technology… History, Science, Life and many more topics will be covered. Recently I discovered that there are great full documentaries posted on YouTube. I watched some of them (created by recognized people like National Geographic, BBC, History Channel and Discovery). So, just thought about sharing them with you! Lets start the series with a documentary about the world’s first computer built by ancient Romans!

Until very recently, we thought the world’s first mechanical computer was built by Charles Babbage in 1837. But in the 1900, an old Roman ship was discovered near the Greek island Antikythera. The ship contained ancient artifacts and a very complex machine built with a lot of different gears, which raised many questions among the scientists. They called it the Antikythera mechanism.

After thorough testing and analysis, a final decision was made… It was the first mechanical computer in the world! It had a very similar design to the Charles Babbage’s creation. But how did they created it thousands of years ago? A machine with such a complexity?

This proves that our ancestors were smarter than us! Today we use sophisticated technological devices to build stuff. But our ancestors managed to build this machine and to do the necessary calculations with primitive tools and their brains. It’s not the knowledge that led them to do these things. It’s the intelligence. Their lives were more simpler but they were more advanced than we think. So, do not under-estimate the power of our ancestors!
