Every year, we (Sri Lankans) celebrate our New Year on April. According to our astrologists, today the Sun moves from the Meena Rashiya (House of Pisces) to the Mesha Rashiya (House of Aries) in the celestial sphere. That’s when we celebrate our new year. This time it happens at 7:20 PM IST. That means right now!
Unlike the new year we celebrate in January, in April, all Sinahala and Tamil Sri Lankans celebrate this day with a lot of events. In the new year we have predefined auspicious times to perform each and every task. These times are calculated every year so they change. There’s a special time to start cooking for the new year, there’s a special time to eat, start your work, etc. So, everyone in the country perform these tasks in the same time!
Its a very big festival and the best part is, we make our finest sweets at this time. In the new year day, the table will be full of home made sweets and among them, oil cakes are the best!
Earlier we celebrated the new year by showing you a cool graphic. Today I decided to do something new. In the morning I took my camera and stepped into the garden in order to take a picture of the symbol of our new year. But unfortunately I was unable to find that bird (Cuckoo). But I managed to take picture of 3 more items closely associated with our new year. A Betal leaf, and two kinds of Oil cakes. I can’t post more sweets because they will be cooked after I publish this post.
