VPS Hosting vs. Shared/Dedicated Hosting

VPS Hosting vs. Shared

VPS Hosting vs. Shared

Web hosting is available in different packages. These hosting services include services that vary from the multiple servers clustered together to the single server used at home. Depending upon the user requirement one would be able to choose the service they need. However the different types of hosting services available are VPS hosting, shared hosting and dedicated hosting.

1) Difference:

People prefer to choose the shared hosting service due to its easiness of use.

  • In the shared hosting plan the user could share their web server with the other users.
  • The VPS hosting service also shares the server with the other users but they have been given with an individual computer function.
  • On the other hand the dedicated hosting service will give full control to the user. It differs from the shared hosting and VPS hosting by not sharing its servers.

2) Features:

  • In the shared hosting as the users shares the services hence if any error occurs in scripting then all users work would be affected.
  • In case of VPS hosting the problem would not affect the other users as everyone has their own set of functions to perform in their computer. The files and data of the owner also kept safe and do not get affected by the other users to whom the server is shared.
  • VPS service renders the users with good performance and more security compared to share hosting.

3) Private Email Server:

  • The Virtual Private Server offers its users to have their own email server. The user does not need to share it with other users, so they have full access to their emails. All their emails come from a unique IP address that helps in speeding up the work.
  • In the shared hosting as the server is divided among several users hence the emails comes from the same servers and it handles thousands of domains at the same time.

4) Firewall Protection:

  • In the shared hosting the firewall security is offered to its users that prevent their files from getting hacked or attacked by the malicious virus or applications. This service allows every user to use their files under the security of the firewall.
  • In the VPS hosting, every user has given the right to unlock any file or service from the firewall security.

5) Cost Effective:

  • The shared hosting service shared the server among multiple users so it is a cost effective service. The bandwidth, RAM, email server is all shared among the users hence the user have to use these shared resources.
  • The VPS service as the name defines Virtual Private Server has own privacy while providing the hosting service. Users have their control on the management of their resources but it is little expensive than shared hosting.

6) Performance:

  • As both the shared and VPS hosting services renders with the good performance to its users but the VPS is a good option available. It offers great deal of facilities to its users compared to the shared hosting. It is recommended for the moderate needs.

Ok, nice to land here and get some decent info after my site was branded as “Bandwidth Exceeded” a few minutes back. I am using a Hostgator Business Hosting Plan, that provides, as per the specs on its site, an “Unlimited Bandwidth” usage. However, I still got a “Bandwidth Exceeded” error message, and I didn’t know how that could be, until I contacted their technical support person who informed that they actually provide only about 25% of server resource usage on their shared hosting plans.

Now, as it stands, I will need to have to upgrade my hosting . The issue is, my site’s a fairly new one and not into generating decent revenues yet. Its an info site and the revenue model is via adverts (adsense and others). But with just about 1000 visitors a day, it’s still early days and not viable for me to get a dedicated hosting at this point either.

So I am thinking of going for a VPS plan for now. Since I don’t need to run any additional software or anything of the sort, and my site is WordPress based, is it a OK choice until i start making some revenue and upgrade to a dedicated?

    Thanks,
