A Burned Laptop (By wlef70 and js.c)
Last month we talked about a serious problem in Linux which effects many new Laptop owners. If you own a brand new Laptop, most of the time, you might face overheating problems. Some people ignore this problem and continue to work as usual. But, this over heating might go out of control and it can shorten the life of you Lap!
According to the community, the biggest issue which cause this over heating is the way the new Linux kernel handle power management. You can learn more about this issue from my previous post : Your Laptop gets Overheated while using Linux? Lets see How To fix it! In that post, I have mentioned several solutions which you can try until they fix the problem in the kernel.
For some people, this should work. But unfortunately, there are some people who still face a lot of heating even after trying out all the solutions (Like me :( ). So, I did some research and here’s what I found…
First I wanted to know whether this is a problem specific to Ubuntu. So, First I tried :
OpenSUSE :
Its still over heating and the CPU fan is screaming!
Fedora :
Still it’s overheating. But, in Fedora, it’s a bit less (Only by a very small amount).
Sabayon :
I think it handled things better than the others. But still the heat is a bit too much. The biggest problem I had with Sabayon is that it didn’t detect my VGA drivers by default!
So, the problem is not specific to Ubuntu! Now, we know that there’s a problem in the kernel and it must be fixed soon. I think there’s another problem. In my system, the CPU is not the only thing which over heats. The GPU temperature is even higher! Why is this? Is it just me or does it happen to all new GPUs?
Recently, people started to introduce switchable graphics cards. If you are on battery power, your system will automatically switch from the existing VGA to the less powered on-board VGA. Normally, this works great in Windows systems. But in Linux, still it’s not fully working. Sadly, for my ATI card, still there’s no drivers available! Can it be a cause of our problems?
When we dive deeper into this problem, more questions were raised than answers! I don’t know about you but I still don’t know the exact cause of these problems… If you also want to see an answer for this problem,
Please help us to find the solution…
If you are already facing this over heating problem in your laptop (while using Linux). Please lave a comment below with the following details :
The model of your laptop :
The manufacturer :
The CPU :
Ram :
The VGA model :
And the Linux distributions you tried :
If you have any further details which you think might help us, please put them in. After collecting these data, we might be able to pin point the exact problem… Before we find a solution, we need to find the cause of this problem. So, let’s do it! Tell your friends and try to give us much data as possible. After collecting the data, we will try to contact the experts and find the solution! Lets hope this will help us to end this problem once and for all!
