avast! Free Mobile Security
Avast is one of the top security experts in the world. They are very popular for their feature rich, free anti-virus suit. If I’m correct, they are the people who offer that much features for free. Recently, they bought ITAgents company which builds a mobile anti theft app called Theft Aware. Now, they have combined the power of Theft Aware and their own malware scanners to build one powerful Security Suit!
Already, we have a lot of popular security suits for Android devices like Lookout, AVG, Norton and Bitdefender. But, most of them have a price tag on the top. If we want more features like Anti Theft, we need to pay. Except for Bitdefender which is a fully free app.
Avast is a bit new but they have a lot to offer. For a start, they have included some features which no other security app have to offer. For example, Avast have a Firewall which can control your apps the way you want. You can let some apps to access only Wifi connections. You can block some apps and prohibit them from accessing the web!
Like all the others, Avast also have a malware scanner which can scan the installed apps, internal memory and even the SD card for malware. The specialty in this scanner is that you can schedule it to run scans automatically! Just like in a real desktop machine!
Like Bitdefender, Avast also have a web shield which can scan all the links we visit. It also have a comprehensive SMS/Call filtering service which seems to be doing a lot of things. But, I don’t think I’ll need it for now…
The best part of Avast is its great Anti Theft features. I just thought it would just let us pinpoint the exact location of our phone… Most of the other apps have this feature. But, Avast goes beyond that… Before writing this post, I just activated the Anti Theft features… It gets installed as a separate app on your phone and you’ll get the honor of cloaking the app. That means, no one can find the Anti Theft app because it will be disguised with a different name and it said that it will even hide the icon after I apply the settings. (Didn’t set the settings yet…)
After you set things up, the thief won’t stand a chance. If some one steal the phone, you can track it with GPS, you can sound an alarm which will blow up the thief, reset the phone or you can even let the phone call you silently and listen to what the thief says. Not only that, if the thief tries to replace the SIM card, it will sound a siren and send you the new phone number. No much escape for the poor guy! But if the thief gets sick of the sirens and smash the phone…. Lets not talk about that part….
Avast’s security suit have a lot of advanced features and that’s why it needs root access to activate some of its features. If you have already rooted your phone, then, you can get the maximum use of this app.
