Who is Linus? Don’t ask me… If you use Linux, you should know that Linus Torvalds is the father of Linux! What is Gnome? You should also know the answer to this question. Gnome is the most popular desktop environment we use in Linux systems. Everyone knows that recently Gnome released Gnome 3 with a huge change and some users didn’t like this! Now, even the father of Linux hates it!
Last year, with beta builds, Gnome started to change its path. It tried to re-invent the whole desktop with a simpler design. Ubuntu followed this path by introducing their own version of the shell named Unity. Actually, many users hate Unity. Even from the polls we conducted recently, its clear that many hates Unity and now they are trying to move to the old Gnome 2 or to alternative distributions. But, it looks like Unity is not alone.
It looks like Gnome 3 have also managed to get a huge fan club wearing “I hate Gnome 3″ T-Shirts. Now, even the father of Linux have joined this club. In a recent comment he made through his Google+ account, he have called Gnome 3 Crazy : “That’s just crazy crap”!
Why can’t I have shortcuts on my desktop? Why can’t I have the expose functionality? Wobbly windows? Why does anybody sane think that it’s a good idea to have that “go to the crazy ‘activities’” menu mode?
I used to be upset when gnome developers decided it was “too complicated” for the user to remap some mouse buttons. In gnome3, the developers have apparently decided that it’s “too complicated” to actually do real work on your desktop, and have decided to make it really annoying to do.
Here’s an example of “the crazy”: you want a new terminal window. So you go to “activities” and press the “terminal” thing that you’ve made part of your normal desktop thing (but why can’t I just have it on the desktop, instead of in that insane “activities” mode?). What happens? Nothing. It brings your existing terminal to the forefront.
That’s just crazy crap. Now I need to use Shift-Control-N in an old terminal to bring up a new one. Yeah, that’s a real user experience improvement. Sure.
Linus doesn’t like the way Gnome 3 have changed his life. He says that Gnome 3 have serious usability issues. He also doesn’t like the idea of not having any shortcuts in his desktop! Even I have the same issue when using the latest Gnome 3. But, if I can remeber correctly, Unity allows us to create shortcuts in the desktop.
Gnome 3 have tried to change the way we worked. But, most of the geeks don’t like it. Some think that adjusting to a new environment can slow them down. Actually, its true… So, if we want to change, we must always do it slowly without jumping long distances. This is what I think. You might think differently. You might even love Gnome 3. I also don’t have any strong hatred towards it. Actually, im nutral.
Not only Linux. Now even Microsoft is trying to introduce a whole new interface for Windows 8. Will Bill Gates refuse Windows 8? Since he is not that much active in Microsoft, it can happen! What do you think?
