Everybody has tech laying around their office- it’s just how it is. No matter how much we try to declutter our office, there are some necessities that need to remain in order for us to be both productive and resourceful. If you’re looking for tips to save space with your tech, take a look at the ones below.
Your Desktop Computer:
First off, unless you need to plug your headphones in during work and listen to music (I do) then make sure your tower stays on the ground and out of site. If you’re looking to save more space, you can always look into touch screen computers (like Touchsmart from HP computers).
You may think that they’re lacking some kind of computing functionality but just because they’re smaller, doesn’t mean you’re losing capability.
You can also look into hooking up your laptop directly to monitors to get rid of your tower completely; DVI or HDMI (or VGA, depending on how old your monitor is) connectors will be easy to find. Which leads us into our next section…
Dual screens:
While everyone ABSOLUTELY loves dual screens (and if they don’t, I say they do!) there are alternatives. For one, you don’t have to have identical dual screen sizes. I know, I know. You want it to look pretty. But do you NEED the extra room on your second monitor? If you can get away with having a large (22 inch and above) primary monitor, then why not go for a 19 inch secondary monitor? Better yet, if you’re a tablet fan (iPad in specific) you can always use apps like Air Display to connect it as a second monitor to both a Mac and Windows machine.
The Dreaded Office Phone:
We almost all need an office phone (even if we don’t like to use it) but that doesn’t mean we have to have a big clunky phone with 80 billion buttons sitting on our desks. Unless you’re an executive, but in that situation you probably have a large enough office and space where you don’t need to worry about saving room.
If you’re in dire need o f having an office phone, look into various VOIP apps that allow you to have two lines on your cell or even hookup and get a Skype account so you can talk with a headset.
File Cabinets (the biggest space hoggers of all):
Okay, please. There are tons of ways to save information that’s actually on a physical document other than filing them away in a container. You can find tons of programs and devices (neat scanner, for one) to scan all your documents in and file them for you. Or, if you feel so incline, you can even use something like Dropbox or Evernote to catalog and file what you need for easy access. If you’re working for a large corporation you can considered looking into cloud computing services to eliminate the majority of old school filing methods (except for the finance department as they probably use a financial suite already).
This method is great for those who don’t even need to “file” things as companies who are big into development and need to store multiple file versions that are large and eat away at computer memory.
Those are just a few simple tips on how to leverage tech to declutter your office without having to sacrifice computing ability, time, power or anything else. What other ways can tech help declutter your office?
