Mark Shuttleworth (The Father of Ubuntu) have just now announced the name of their future release Ubuntu 11.10 which will be released on this October! They name their releases in the alphabetical order. Ubuntu 11.04 (Which is going to be release on this April) is called Natty Narwhal. The first word is an adjective and the second is an animal. In here, Natty means “neatly or trimly smart in dress or appearance” and Narwhal is a toothed whale which lives in the Arctic region. For Ubuntu 11.10, the starting letter is “O“… Know the adjective and the lucky animal which will power it?
“What we want is something imaginative, something dreamy. Something sleek and neat, too. Something that has all the precision of T S Eliot’s poetry, matched with the “effable ineffability” of our shared values, friendship and expertise. Something that captures both the competence of ubuntu-devel with the imagination of ayatana.”
According to Mark’s blog post, after going through lots of names such as oddball octopus and a name of a skunk, they have finally decided to settle on something dreamy! So, the first adjective will be Oneiric which means dreamy and the animal will be… Ocelot. Ocelot (Dwarf Leopard) is a small wild cat (looks a lot like a domestic cat) which have a very valuable fur and lives mostly in South and Central America. It might be a wild cat, but its a bit small and cute to be a relative of the fearless Leopard!
Oneiric means “dreamy”, and the combination with Ocelot reminds me of the way innovation happens: part daydream, part discipline.
Currently, the Ubuntu team is working on integrating a brand new shell to their OS called Unity. This Gnome shell replacement is a product of Ubuntu and it’s currently used in their Netbook edition. Natty is going to start spreading Unity and Oneiric Ocelot is going to make it more stronger. They are going to add more support for 2D and OpenGL which can be used by people who don’t have the hardware to support its 3D version. They are also going to add more support for Qt applications and make it do more work for Ubuntu.
Now they have already started planing out the Oneiric Ocelot, you’ll be able to get your hands on the first Alpha release very soon. After “O” we have “P” on the alphabet! So, what do you think? What will be the name of Ubuntu 12.04? Any idea?
