Ubuntu is always popular as the most user friendly Linux distribution which is one of the first choices of almost everyone who are new to Linux. Recently, Ubuntu released the first release candidate of Maverick Meerkat. This release is very close to the final release, so, its a very good source to learn about the new features that’s going to come in Ubuntu 10.10. The Installation Process :
The new release have a lot of improvements in their installation process. Not only an interface re-design, but also some technical improvements. In the first screen that you see after the welcome message, Ubuntu will check whether your system meets the minimum requirements for Ubuntu 10.10. It will mainly check the available disk space, your power source, and the Internet connectivity. They will also ask you whether you want to download and install third party software or updates during the installation.
The next thing I saw is the change in the order of the installation process. In the earlier releases, you’ll have to set the time and the keyboard layout before the partitioning. But, here we get the partitioning at first. But it have a very good reason. After you finish the partitioning, you’ll notice that Ubuntu will immediately start formatting and copying the required files while you set up other things. In this way, you’ll save your precious time!
Next they’ll prompt you to set up the time, keyboard layout and your personal details. After that, your done setting up! Ubuntu will now show you what it got to offer while the installation is being finished.
The Look :
The themes of the new Ubuntu is Ambiance and Radiance.These themes doesn’t have much difference from Ubuntu 10.04. But people say that it have some bug fixes. They also have included some new wallpapers. Apart from all of them, the most important thing I saw is the new Ubuntu font! Maverick Meerkat is going to get the final, stable Ubuntu font which is built specially for Ubuntu!

Installing Software :
In the new system, Ubuntu software center have got a lot of improvements. Now it shows a list of featured software in the main screen. Not only that, now, all the .deb files are handled by the software center. That means, when you try to install something from a .deb file, it will take you straight to the software center. Another major change is that, now you can get payed software from the software center! But personally, I don’t like the look of this.

No Software Sources?
In the early releases, we got the Ubuntu software sources under the administration menu. But now, its missing! Now you can get it by using the update manager. Open the update manager and click on “Settings” in the bottom left corner.
This and many more changes are going to come into Ubuntu 10.10. They might have done a little to improve the look of their system when compared to the earlier version, but still they got a lot of under the hood improvements and new features that you might love to see.
