These days, the annual Pwn2Own contest is underway at the CanSecWest security conference held in Vancouver, BC. To win this contest, you need to exploit a given target! (In simple terms.. try to hack it!). So, at first, they took out Safari, next Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox!
As I said earlier, in this contest, people try to exploit their given targets to get to the $100,000 USD worth prizes! First, Vincenzo Iozzo and Ralf Philipp Weinmann managed to take down iPhone and access all of its text messages! After that, Charlie Miller brought down Safari and won a MacBook Pro! Next, Peter Vreugdenhil succeeded with Internet Explorer 8 on Windows 7 64bit and won the HP Envy Beats. And Firefox was taken down by Nils on Windows 7 who got the Sony Vaio!
Currently, IPhone, Safari, IE 8 and Firefox are taken down! Then what about Chrome and Opera? They seems to be ignoring Opera saying that its not widely used! (But that doesn’t say Opera is completely safe!)
Google Chrome is still waiting to be tested! But some say its not been tested because its a bit hard to crack because of its sandboxing technology!
It is this sandboxing that might explain why Google’s Chrome was untouched; no researcher even attempted to attack it.
Actually, this contest proves that there are no single browser in the world which is perfectly safe! People used to say Humans are not perfect! The same thing applies to their creations!
Safari seems to be the first browser to fall! Actually, I don’t think many people use Safari unless your an Apple user!
IE is the next! Actually, in the past few years, Internet Explorer have clearly proven that, its not a good browser to use! Remember the bug in IE which allowed the hackers to hack into the big giant Google! Recently I wrote a small article about IE : Internet Explorer 9 Beta : Do You Really Care About it?. I think it explains why we should not use IE
Next came Firefox! The most respected browser in the world! I think this proves that nothing is safe! If the hacker is really good… he can hack you in one way or the other!
The fact that Chrome is still not tested, doesn’t mean that its completely safe! According to the contestants, it seems to be a bit hard to crack! But, I say we should wait till the end of the contest before throwing away our browsers!
What do you think? Do you think your safe now? I don’t think so…
